Lets Learn Something!

People want to see their children thrive and grow up with a good life. Children need school. These days you see many children dreading to get up in the morning to go to school and learn. That should not be the case. Kids need to love to go to school and be excited about learning. The same goes for their teachers. Teachers are told what curriculum that has to be followed and what specific way they have to teach it to their students. Every year there are many developments on the learning process. Now there is common core. Common core is making it difficult for students to learn and for teachers to teach. It is very hard to understand and no one is really grasping it like they should. Common core should be thrown out the window and educators should be able to teach the curriculum as they see fit.

Common core was started in 2009. There were 88,663 operating schools in the school year 2011-2012 were responsible for instruction in the standard curriculum as well as other areas. That does not include special education, vocational, or alternative schools.  That is almost ninety thousand schools in the United States that need to follow the standard rules. In New York State alone, there are 4,752 operating schools, with 209,527 teachers in the schools year 2011-2012.

Today, teachers have to follow strict guidelines on how they teach their students. These guidelines make it more difficult for the students to learn the material. On top of the students learning everything the new way, teachers have to learn it as well. According to the U.S. Department of Education, schools should be held responsible for raising academic standards. That is not necessarily the case. Schools do not have much of a choice when it comes to the curriculum that is needed to be taught.

There is a program called, “Teach to Lead” under the U.S Department of Education. As they state in their mission, “Teach to Lead envisions a world in which teachers are valued as the foremost experts in instruction and, as such, are leaders in developing, informing, and implementing education policy and practice to steer systemic improvements to benefit student learning.”  Their mission statement basically coincides with what I am trying to say. Teachers today are told what to teach and how to teach it. That way may not be the right way for the student to learn. Teachers know their students. They usually see the kids just as much as the parents do, sometimes even more. Educators are able to decipher which learning method is the best way to have their students obtain knowledge.

All kids should be in school, and love going everyday. Teachers should know what they’re teaching. Don’t you think teachers should be able to teach their students in a way that they know is the best for the kids? If teacher have to continue following the specific ways to teach, the education system may go downhill. It seems like teachers are not trusted to teach like they used to.
